Every custom drawer insert that ever came out wrong came out wrong for the same reason: a bad measurement. I printed a full tray once where one tool was measured 5 millimeters short. Everything else fit perfect. That one pocket gripped its tool like a vise, and the whole tray went in the scrap bin.
The fix turned out to be sitting in the printer tray all along. A sheet of printer paper is a precision reference object: every Letter sheet on earth is 279.4 by 215.9 millimeters, every A4 sheet is 297 by 210. How It Works
When you check the paper option in the TracetoForge editor, three things happen before the normal tracing even starts. The app finds the sheet in your photo, figures out whether it is Letter or A4 from the proportions, and corrects the perspective, remapping the image as if your camera had been perfectly overhead even if you shot at a slight angle. Since the paper's true size is known, the scale of everything on it is known too. Width and height fill in automatically, and you can still fine-tune them if you have caliper numbers you trust more.
That perspective correction quietly fixes the other classic photo problem: a phone held at a small tilt stretches one end of the tool in the image. Corrected against the paper's corners, the stretch is gone.
What Kind of Accuracy to Expect
We tested this against caliper measurements on real photos, indoors under a desk lamp and outdoors in shade. Dimensions landed within roughly 2 to 3 millimeters of true, and diameter-type measurements within about 1 millimeter. The measurement engine estimates the paper's brightness across the frame and ignores cast shadow, so a soft shadow under the tool does not inflate the numbers.

Getting the Best Shot
- Darker surface under the paper. White paper on a white counter has no edges to find. Wood, a dark mat, or a workbench all work.
- All four corners in frame. The sheet is the ruler. A cropped corner breaks the math.
- Light from above. Overhead shop light or outdoor shade throws almost no shadow. Harsh side light is the one thing that costs accuracy.
- Shoot roughly straight down. A small tilt is fine, the correction handles it. Extreme angles lose detail on the far edge.

Where This Pays Off
Multi-tool trays are the obvious one, since a full drawer of tools measured by hand is an hour with calipers and a notepad. It also covers the tools calipers handle badly: pliers wider than your caliper jaws, odd-shaped scrapers, anything with a taper.
